Day 4 - Highline Walking to Times Square

Started the day with a walk along the Highline walk. This is an old railway track that ran through warehouses above the city streets. When it was no longer used as a railway line it was just left and becoming an eye sore until someone decided to turn the space into a garden. It is absolutely lovely. It is like a little escape above the city and you can see everything from a different perspective while walking along surrounded by plants and trees. They have left the tracks in place so it is a really interesting part of the city. They had a couple of little food stalls up there. We even came across some filming of CSI: NY!!

Next stop a visit to Macy's department store. Apparently the biggest store in the WORLD! It is huge and overwhelming. But the kids Levi's were on sale so grabbed a couple of pairs.

Lunch today was at a place called Eatily (like Italy but with eat). Wow. A huge place with lots of different areas to try Italian food and very traditional. We shared a plate of cheeses and meats. Fantastic coffee!

Wall St. was our next stop to trade some bonds and stocks. Still very happy with our Aussie dollar.

Next we visited the 9/11 memorial site. At this stage you need tickets (no charge) to get in and the security is very high. The reflection pools they have created at the site are beautiful and have all the names of the people who passed away. We were also most impressed and inspired by the survivors tree. There was a tree in the courtyard of the World Trade Centre which amazingly survived the attack on the WTC. It was transplanted to the site where it is now. Shortly after a storm uprooted it. And yet it still survives. What a good tree.

After a little more shopping we had a final trip in to Times Square. The lights and the signs are overwhelming. We had time for a quick trip to M&M world - three floors of m&m branded "stuff" -everything from shower curtains to earrings. And of course every colour and flavour you can think of!

Hotdog in Times Square and a subway ride home for dinner, packing and an early night before we head off to Niagra Falls in the morning.

New York, New York it's a wonderful town!

  1. How many bags did you start with? How is the luggage space going? As much as I don't like shopping I think I would go into a crazy frenzy. I hope we get to see you guys as extras on CSI..
